Curriculum Intent for PSHE and RSE
At Halifax Primary School, we are committed to nurturing every pupil’s potential as an individual, a valued member of our school community, and a responsible citizen. Our progressive curriculum empowers children to recognise their self-worth, collaborate effectively with others, and navigate changes and challenges they may encounter through their education and beyond.

At Halifax, we have ensured that our curriculum relates to challenges and experiences children may have at different stages of their schooling but with recurrent themes to ensure that they respect differences and diversity, and therefore go onto having effective and fulfilling relationships. Our PSHE and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum, based on the Jigsaw curriculum, provides weekly standalone lessons. However, our PSHE curriculum is designed to be responsive and tailored to individual cohorts so we can respond to specific issues and needs within the year groups. We collaborate with external experts, such as OM Health and Wellbeing Consultancy, to keep our knowledge up-to-date and prepare Halifax pupils for an ever-changing world. Through whole-school assemblies and phase-specific talking assemblies, we explore important themes and issues together.

In line with our whole school values, our teaching and learning in PSHE aims to:
Nurture – Inclusivity and Diversity – PSHE nurtures children to be confident and successful, increasing their capacity to learn and prepare them for the challenges they face outside of the school community, and as they leave Halifax and enter the modern world. PSHE also provides children with opportunities to develop their emotional intelligence and learn important life skills.

Provide Aspiration – Possibilities – At Halifax, we aim to provide children with the skills they need to enable them to achieve their best in life. We want all children to leave Halifax with an appreciation and respect for themselves, as well as those around them. We want them to have the communication and life skills to allow them to be successful in their future as they move to secondary school and beyond. Children need to have the confidence to be independent and share their ideas and learning, and we build on this through assemblies and oracy discussions.

Develop Curiosity – community: We aim for children to have the confidence to ask questions and question the world around them. Building community relationships is important to, and we work hard to help children understand how the community around Halifax can support us, for example through visits to the local church or with the emergency services.

Encourage Collaboration - oracy: PSHE lessons are filled with discussion and games that encourage the children to share ideas and questions each other. Discussions lead children to see life through other people’s eyes and help them to understand the world around them.

In all subjects at Halifax, we have Quality of Education reviews where our pupils share their learning and experiences in different subjects. Below is just a small sample of what our Halifax pupils think about PSHE at Halifax.

In Key Stage One, children commented that:

'PSHE was calming.'

'PSHE lessons help us learn about each other.'

'We get to set goals and dreams.'

In Key Stage Two, children added that our PSHE lessons help us to ‘learn to be responsible to others.'
