Curriculum Intent for Art

At Halifax Primary School, we want our children to love art, craft and design! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, architects, or printmakers. Our Art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Art and Design reflects and shapes our history, and how it contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the Art and Design National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. We want our children to use the local area as inspiration, to learn from other cultures and to respect diversity. We want to nurture children’s confidence in creating art, so art lessons can be a genuine place for self-exploration and freedom of expression. We encourage them to be proud of what they achieve and what they learn.

At Halifax, we have ensured that curriculum has coverage of the different medias within art and design and have tailored experiences and needs for Halifax pupils with carefully planned progression across the school from Reception to Year 6.

Impact – What our pupils say about art at Halifax:

In all subjects at Halifax, we have Quality of Education reviews where our pupils share their learning and experiences in different subjects. Below is just a small sample of what our Halifax pupils think about art.

Eliza in Year 5 said, “I enjoy art as I can be creative in any way and there is no right or wrong answer.”

Jorgie in Year 3 said, “I love art when we learn different techniques. I liked stippling when drawing and painting.”

Chase in Year 4 said, “I like art lessons because I can get better at drawing and it’s fun. I’m going to be an artist when I’m older……I would like to illustrate books.”
